(Halifax, NS)-In AUS-RSEQ interlock action, the Montreal Carabins defeated the University of New Brunswick Varsity in straight sets 25-20, 25-20, 25-18.

In the first set neither team was giving an inch early on as the score was tied 10-10. Montreal managed to open up a little breathing room growing the gap to 14-11 before the Varsity Reds pulled within one at the technical time to make the score 16-15 Montreal. Coming out of the technical the Carabins started to find their footing as they strung together a small run and found themselves up 21-16 on the Varsity Reds. The Carabins would not look back taking the first set 25-20.

The second set saw more of the same back and forth action. Montreal managed to build a 16-13 lead going into the technical timeout. After the timeout the Carabins continued their momentum jumping out 22-17 and threatening to take a second set in a row. Thanks to hot serving from UNB's Pascal McCarthy (Fredericton, NB) the Varsity Reds pulled within two before the Carabins fought back, ultimately taking the second set 25-20.

In the third set the Carabins Marc-André Morency (Longeuil, QC) helped his team jump out to the early 6-0 lead with good serving. The Carabins kept the pace and went into the technical timeout with a seven point cushion leading 16-9. A big block by the Varsity Reds after the timeout helped spark a small three-point run but it wasn't enough as Montreal took the set 25-18 and the match in straight sets.

Godefroy Veyron-Trudel (Quebec, QC) led the way for the Carabins with 10 kills and seven digs, accumulating 12 points, while McCarthy had eight kills and four digs for the Varsity Reds and was named the Subway Player of the Game.

Montreal will look to continue their success tomorrow against Dalhousie, while UNB takes on Sherbooke in their second match of the interlock.
