Scott Bailey and Logan Baillie had a great season with the Tigers men’s volleyball team this year. After helping the Tigers to an AUS championship and a fourth place finish at the CIS championship, they’ve both really hit their stride in the classroom.

A second-year outside hitter, Scott Bailey won the second year electrical engineering design contest this year, along with classmates Darrell Read, Nicola Jones and Amit Malik. Each team was tasked with designing and programming a turret that would use sonar and/or laser detection to automatically locate targets that randomly emerged from a playing table.

“The objective was to program your turret to locate, aim and shoot marbles at as many targets as possible within a time limit,” says Bailey. “Our team won, hitting four of the five targets.”

In winning the competition, Bailey and his teammates scored full marks on their project and secured bragging rights in taking home the Marc Leblanc trophy.

Third-year libero, Logan Baillie will be attending the Offshore Technology Conference May 4-7 in Houston, Texas, as a member of Nova Scotia’s Department of Energy (NSDE) team.

The NSDE provided the all-expenses paid trip as a prize of an essay contest. The contest was open to previous winners of the Pengrowth Scholarship, which Baillie won in his grade twelve year of high school. All applicants were tasked with writing an essay on why they should be chosen to attend the conference and Baillie was selected as the winner. While at the conference, he will get the opportunity to attend NSDE meetings in addition to attending presentations and symposiums and check out trade show and exhibits.

“It’s a really great opportunity,” says Baillie. “I’m hoping to further my knowledge in offshore technology and network for co-op jobs and future career opportunities.”

Baillie and his team headed to Houston May 1, a few days in advance for the conference to prepare.
