Two third period goals lift Axemen past Tigers 4-2

The Acadia Axemen had two goals in the third period and defeated the Dalhousie Tigers Friday night at the Halifax Forum.

The Tigers (1-9-1), who had just won their first game of the season on Wednesday, are left searching for answers after letting yet another game slip away. Acadia now sit at 10-1-0 and are first in the AUS.

Neither team could find their groove on the powerplay, with the Axemen going 1-8 and the Tigers were held scoreless on six chances.

Alex Beaton opened the scoring for Acadia just four minutes into the game, off a pass from Scott Trask.

In the final minute of the first period Chris Ivanko cut past the Axemen's defense and fired a shot on net, and after a scrum around the net, Fabian Walsh buried the puck past Brandon Glover and the game was tied going into the first intermission.

Acadia poured on the shots in the second, which ended in a tic-tac-toe play finished by Chris Owens which put the Axemen up 2-1 after 40 minutes of play.

Dalhousie came back into the third period with a sense of urgency and Brett Therbegre sniped one from a tough angle  three minutes in and it was a whole new game with 17 minutes left to go.

And that's when Acadia showed why they're first in the AUS.

Chris Owens tipped a point shot past Wendell Vye to put the Axemen up 3-2 with ten minutes left to go, and the Axemen never looked back.

Acadia captain Liam Heelis buried a shot top shelf on a 2 on 0 breakaway with 34 second left to seal the deal for Acadia, and the Axemen went on to win 4-2.

The Tigers will look to get back on track when they take on the Saint Mary's Huskies on November 27th. The Axemen will head to Antigonish next Saturday night to take on the X-Men.
