Christie scores 51 in loss to Reds

The University of New Brunswick Reds defeated the Dalhousie Tigers 90-79 at Dalplex on Saturday night.

It was a slow start to the game as Samuel Maillet (Moncton, NB) made it 10-6 for the Tigers with 4:56 left of the first quarter. Malcolm Christie (Fredericton, NB) gave the Tigers the lead again with 3:20 left of the quarter off a 3-pointer.

UNB's Justin Chase (Scarborough, ON) cut the lead to six with 21 seconds left of the first quarter with a layup.

Christie finished the quarter with a fastbreak layup at the buzzer to give the Tigers a 30-19 lead.

UNB's Brandon Laryea (Crawley, UK) opened the scoring in the second quarter with a 3-pointer, cutting the lead to eight points. Laryea also had a block later in the quarter, leading to a Norm Burry (Grafton, NB) 3-pointer.

With 21 seconds left of the half, Christie made his fourth 3-pointer of the night to give the Tigers a 49-45 lead going into halftime.

Christie was on fire in the first half, scoring 30 points. Burry led the Reds in scoring with 18 points.

Marcus Barnes (Kitchener, ON) opened the scoring in the second half with a 3-pointer to bring the Reds within one point.

Christie would continue to be red-hot from 3-point range. The guard scored 14 points in the quarter.

With time winding down, Vegas Evans (Brampton, ON) made his second 3-pointer in the quarter's final minute. Evans gave the Reds a 69-67 lead going into the fourth quarter.

It was a tightly contested fourth quarter. With 5:53 left of the game, Dal trailed by four points.

Laryea made a jumper with 2:58 left to give the Reds an 85-78 lead.

The Tigers struggled to generate offence in the game's final minutes, losing 90-79.

Christie finished with 51 points in the loss, tying fourth place all-time for the most points scored in an AUS men's basketball game.

Norm Burry led UNB in scoring with 22 points and 11 rebounds.

It was the final game of the semester for both teams. Each team next plays on January 5th.
