Tigers topple Capers 92-63

[HALIFAX NS] –The Dalhousie Tigers beat the Cape Breton Capers 92-63 on Saturday evening at the Dalplex.

It only took 20 seconds for the Tigers to score the first three points of the game from the hands of Samuel Maillet (Moncton, NB).

In the next play, the Capers responded with a quick counterattack to allow Tyson Cato (Ajax, ON) to level the score once again.

With 2 minutes to go in the quarter, Malcom Christie (Fredericton, NB) for Dalhousie added flair to the game with a dunk on the Capers defence.

A fast paced first quarter found the Tigers up 34-14.

On the first play of the second quarter, Maillet came out strong and stole the ball off a Capers inbound where Lydell Husbands-Browne (Halifax, NS) added two-points.

A cross court pass made by Cato from his own half to Justus Peuser (Geisenheim, Germany) in the Tigers half produced a hard-earned two points.

In order to evade the Capers tight defence, Husbands-Browne made a behind the back pass to Riley Stewart (Stevensville, ON) who was in perfect position for a layup.

The Capers reduced the deficit from down 20 to end the half 35-47.

The Tigers came into the second half with grit – they made it almost impossible for the Capers to capitalize on any chances and were always the first to a rebound.

Tyler Fiaui (Fredericton, NB) for the Capers broke the Tigers defence four minutes in the game with another dunk, assisted by a low pass from Peuser.

A few minutes later, Cato had suspected an easy layup, but the hands of Christie denied him of the two-points.

Dalhousie decided they were not done and Maillet decided to add a final dunk to the game.

The Tigers doubled their lead to enter the final quarter 81-46.

In the final quarter, Dalhousie kept up the speed and pressure regardless of Cape Bretons push back and ended the game with the three points.

The Tigers Spencer Riar (Montreal, PQ) was named player of the match. He had 22 of the Tigers 92 points.

The two teams are back in action next week. Dalhousie will travel to Acadia on November 1st to play at 8pm whereas Cape Breton will host Saint Mary's at 8 pm ADT.
