The Memorial Sea-Hawks (6-13)  lost to Dal 87-75 in the first of two games in this weekend series.

The Hawks were able to maintain a close game in the first frame, despite the frantic scoring from both teams. The first quarter was packed with highlight plays, from a monstrous block by Jeff Damalie to an alley-oop connection for Sascha Kappos. At the end of the first, Dal held a lead of 24-18.

The second was a tougher quarter for Memorial, their scoring certainly slowed down while Dalhousie was able to maintain the same pace. The Tigers physicality worked in their favour, drawing plenty of fouls on the Hawks. They ended the first half on a tough buzzer-beater from deep. The Tigers held the lead 42-31.

The third quarter was a tough frame for Memorial. Dal was able to create their largest lead of the game at 17. Memorial was able to trim it, but the Tigers were incredibly consistent in their efforts and it showed in their effective scoring. Kappos was a problem for Memorial, as it seemed like no big man was able to get a solid matchup with him. He was able to convert multiple lob passes from his teammates, and he took up plenty of space at the rim on defense.

For the final quarter, Memorial kept up a fight, but it was too little, too late. Dal was able to keep up their excellent play throughout the game, effectively outperforming Memorial across all areas. Dalhousie shot better from the field and from deep, worked the ball far better for assists, and severely outscored Memorial in bench contribution. It was a tough loss for MUN as they seemed unable to generate any bit of momentum.

For the Hawks, a positive to take away from the loss was the contributions from the starters; each of them posted double digits, with Jason Thompson leading. He posted 17 points, three rebounds, and three assists. For Dalhousie, Kappos led his team with 19 points.

The Hawks will look to clinch a berth into the postseason with a win tomorrow. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00pm with the action also being available on AUStv.ca.
