(Halifax, N.S.) - Dalhousie men’s basketball head coach Rick Plato is pleased to announce the commitment of Shamar Burrows to the 2018-19 lineup.
A 6’3 combo guard, Burrows comes to the Tigers with a wealth of basketball experience.
Burrows began his university career with the Wilfred Laurier Golden Hawks during the 2016-17 season, earning rookie of the year honours after averaging 12.4 points per game in his first season.
A graduate of St. Catherines, Ontario’s Ridley College, Burrows helped lead their basketball team to Canadian Accredited Independent School (CAIS) and Conference of Independent Schools Athletics Association (CISAA) championships in 2016 in addition to winning four tournaments earlier in the season. Their team MVP in both the 2016 and 2015 seasons, he also led them to the school’s first-ever Ontario Federation of Schools Athletic Associations (OFSAA) ‘A’ championship title in 2015. Burrows earned rookie of the year honours in 2014.
A native of Nassau, Bahamas, Burrows has been a member of the Bahamian national team since their bronze medal win in the Centrobasket Tournament in 2012 and represented his country at the 2013 FIBA Americas U16 championship.
“The moment I arrived at Dalhousie, I felt at home on the campus and the basketball court,” says Burrows. “The feeling of culture, diversity and fellowship is what really separated Dalhousie from everywhere else. I am looking forward to furthering my academic and athletic career at Dalhousie and I know that with hard work and dedication, we will achieve great heights as a program.”
The recipient of the Judge Benson Memorial Prize winner in his senior year at Ridley College, Burrows will begin his studies in economics at Dalhousie this fall.
“Shamar is a dynamic and versatile player who will bring maturity, athleticism and a multi-talented skillset that will add depth and scoring punch to next year’s roster,” says Plato. “We are fortunate to have a player who can be effective at both ends of the court. As someone who can play multiple positions, he will be counted upon to make a big impact for us.”
As host of the 2019 U SPORTS Final 8 Men’s Basketball Championship, the Tigers will look to bounce back from a semifinal loss at the conference championship last season to contend for a medal in Halifax next March.
