(Halifax, N.S.) – The Dalhousie Tigers utilized a balanced offensive attack to defeat the visiting Cape Breton Capers 95-60 on Friday night at the Dalplex.
Ten different players scored at least three points for Dalhousie in the victory, led by rookie guard Alex Carson (Halifax, NS), who scored 18 points in just 19 minutes of work. The Capers were paced by swingman Kenny Jean-Louis (Montreal, QC), who netted a team leading 17 points and eight rebounds.
Dalhousie took a 27-13 lead after the opening 10 minutes and never looked back. Carson was on fire from beyond the arc, scoring all nine of his first quarter points from the three-point line, on 3-for-3 shooting.
Dalhousie shot 62.5 percent from the field in the quarter, and also received five and six points from Sven Stammberger (Halifax, NS) and Ritchie Kanza Mata (Toronto, ON), respectively.
Eight of Cape Breton's 13 points in the quarter came from Jean-Louis, who kept his team in the game off of 4-of-5 shooting from the field.
The Tigers offence was too hot on this night however, and they kept on clicking as the game went along. Carson and Kanza Mata provided the energy in the second quarter, with seven and six points to their name, en route to a 52-29 halftime lead on 60 percent shooting from the field as a team.
Reserves Jarred Reid (Aurora, ON) and Sasha Kappos (Miami, FL) kept the tempo up for Dalhousie after the break, adding 14 and 10 points in the second half respectively, en route to the 35 point win.
The two squads were close statistically in terms of free throw attempts and rebounds, however the Tigers offence was simply too much on this night.
With the win, Dalhousie moves to 1-0 while Cape Breton falls to 0-1. Both teams are back in action tomorrow afternoon for the rematch at the Dalplex at 4 p.m.
