Tigers edge Sea-Hawks behind hot start

(St. John's, NL) The Dalhousie Tigers topped the Memorial Sea-­Hawks by a score of 83-­78 in AUS Men's Basketball action on Saturday night at The Field House.

Dalhousie got off to a quick start, as they opened the game on a 14-­2 run. Sven Stammberger, who dropped 10 points in the opening frame, led the Tigers, while Ritchie Kanza Mata chipped in with seven of his own. Dalhousie finished the first up 29-­17.

Memorial regrouped after the first quarter and chipped away at the Dalhousie lead behind some great outside shooting from Daniel Gordon. Gordon was two for two from long range and finished with 8 points in the frame. The Tigers made a late run to go into half with an 11-point margin.

The Sea-­Hawks made a push in the second half, outscoring Dalhousie by four points in the third quarter and two in the final frame. However it wasn't enough to upset the defending AUS champions, who held onto their lead, taking the game by five points with a final score of 83-­78.

Curcic led the Sea-­Hawks with 23 points and three assists. Gould was arguably the Sea-­Hawks best player tonight, as he finished with 21 points and 14 rebounds.

Ritchie Kanza Mata had a team-­high 23 points and 11 rebounds. Sven Stammberger finished with 18 points and six rebounds. Jarred Reid played a strong game off the bench for the Tigers, as he finished with 14 points and six rebounds.

Dalhousie improves to 11-­4 on the season while Memorial is now 5-­10.

The Tigers and Sea-­Hawks are back for round two tomorrow at 1pm at the Field House.
