Varsity Reds outlast the Tigers, win 92-89 in OT

 The UNB Varsity Reds outlasted the Dalhousie Tigers in overtime today at the Dalplex, sweeping the two-game series. Ryan Smith hit both of his free throws with four second left in overtime to put the Varsity Reds up 92-89. Jarred Reid missed a three at the end of overtime and the Varsity Reds held on for the victory.

 

In a foul-filled affair that saw both team trade buckets and change leads, it was the Varsity Reds who came out on top. UNB is off to a surprising 2-0 start on the season, and Brent Baker's squad looks like they have improved after finishing in seventh place last season

The Tigers are now 0-2 on the season and have yet to win under new head coach Rick Plato. Dalhousie came out with a new-look starting lineup of Nick Dickinson, John Traboulsi, Derek Norris, Kashrell Lawrence and Devon Stedman, sitting stars Simon Marr and Ritchie Kanza Mata. The Varsity Reds battled through foul trouble all day, with starters Javon Master, Daniel Quirion and Michal Fazzolari down the stretch. Jordan Irvine had 11 points off the bench for the Varsity Reds.

 

Despite fouling out, first-year guard UNB guard Javon Masters had a game-high 31 points and five rebounds and is off to a fantastic start in his first year in the CIS.Ryan Smith had 20 points, including four in overtime, and 8 rebounds on the night and was a force in the paint all game long.

 

Second-year forward Kashrell Lawrence led the way for the Tigers with a double double, recording 25 points and 14 rebounds. Devon Stedman had 18 points and nine rebounds.

 

The Tigers will look to record their first win of the season when they take on the Acadia Axemen Wednesday in Wolfville at 8:00pm. UNB will host the UPEI Panthers at 8:00pm on Friday.
