McGill, UNB move up to No. 1 in hockey

OTTAWA (CIS) – The McGill Martlets and UNB Varsity Reds are the new teams to beat in CIS women’s and men’s hockey, respectively.
In other CIS sports, the Guelph Gryphons (women’s & men’s cross country), Laval Rouge et Or (women’s soccer), UQAM Citadins (men’s soccer – tied), UBC Thunderbirds (men’s soccer – tied), UBC Okanagan Heat (women’s volleyball) and McMaster Marauders (men’s volleyball) all maintain their pole position.
In women’s hockey, the game of musical chairs continues as McGill becomes the third team in as many coaches’ polls to occupy the No. 1 spot, after Montreal two weeks ago and reigning CIS champion Western last Tuesday. This past weekend, the Martlets (2-0-0) edged nationally third-ranked Montreal 2-1 in a shootout and dominated Ottawa 5-0, while Western (3-2-0) beat Ryerson 3-1 on Saturday but was dropped 3-0 by No. 5 Toronto on Sunday.
In men’s hockey, UNB (4-0-0) and Saskatchewan (6-0-0) both move past defending University Cup champion Alberta (4-1-1), which had topped the first two media polls of the campaign. The V-Reds had a break in their AUS schedule last week and took the opportunity to play a pair of exhibition games against NCAA opponents, defeating Maine 5-1 and battling Harvard to a 3-3 tie. For its part, Alberta split a two-game series against Mount Royal (3-3), losing the opener 4-2 before winning the rematch 2-1 in overtime.
NOTE: The first CIS rankings of the season in basketball will be released next Tuesday (Nov. 3).
