U SPORTS TOP TEN TUESDAY

U SPORTS TOP TEN TUESDAY

As of Tuesday, October 23rd, 2018, Dalhousie has three Varsity teams ranked in the top ten in the country. The women's cross country team ranks fourth, the men's basketball team ranks fifth and the women's volleyball team ranks seventh.

TORONTO (U SPORTS) - The Carleton Ravens (men) and Laval Rouge et Or (women) are the top-ranked U SPORTS basketball programs to begin the 2018-19 season.

The Ravens, who had captured seven straight national titles before earning a bronze medal last March, tipped off their campaign with an 87-69 road win over crosstown rival Ottawa. The Rouge et Or, meanwhile, finished sixth in the nation last season and will start the regular season Nov. 8 at Concordia. The defending champion Calgary Dinos (men) and Carleton Ravens (women) open at No.3 and No. 8 respectively.

In men’s cross country, the McMaster Marauders take over the No.1 spot the final rankings of the year, after capturing their first OUA championship on Saturday since 1964, while in women’s hockey, the Montreal Carabins (3-0-0) are the new team to beat following back-to-back wins over Concordia and Carleton. They’ll visit the crosstown rival Stingers and McGill Martlets this weekend.

In other U SPORTS rankings, Queen’s (women’s cross country), Cape Breton (men’s soccer), Trinity Western (women’s soccer), UNB (men’s hockey), Laval (men’s volleyball) and Calgary (women’s volleyball) remain national leaders for another week.

New this season, U SPORTS is implementing the ELO Rating System for the calculation of its weekly national rankings. Powered by RankR, ELO’s unique algorithm blends a statistical calculation with customized variables that is adaptable across a range of sports. For football and men’s hockey, it will be combined with the results of the media panel balloting (each weighted 50%) to produce the final top 10.
