U SPORTS Top 10 Tuesday
Tigers men's track and field team hurdles over the competition to land in 5th spot this week!
TORONTO (U SPORTS) – The Ryerson Rams are the new team to beat in U SPORTS men’s basketball, after a quartet of new national leaders rose in this week’s Top 10 rankings.
The Rams (17-1) claimed top spot following a weekend sweep in the nation’s capital, highlighted by a 78-74 win over the Carleton Ravens (17-1) on Saturday. The victory gave Ryerson its first No.1 ranking since Feb. 16, 2016 – ending a record-tying 39 consecutive weeks at the pole position for Carleton. The Ravens had previously spent 39 straight weeks at No.1 from Dec. 2, 2002 – Mar. 8, 2005. Both teams now prepare for crosstown rivalry matchups on Friday night, with Ryerson visiting Toronto and Carleton set to face No. 6 Ottawa in the annual Capital Hoops Classic at the Canadian Tire Centre.
On the ice, the reigning national champion Alberta Golden Bears (men) and Manitoba Bisons (women) have also reclaimed top spot in their respective rankings. The Golden Bears (20-3-1) recorded back-to-back convincing 6-3 and 7-1 victories at Regina, while the Bisons (18-4-2) beat Lethbridge on the road twice by 4-2 and 2-1 margins, the latter coming in a shootout. Alberta hosts Lethbridge in men’s action this weekend while the Manitoba women welcome UBC.
Finally, on the court, the Calgary Dinos (15-3) are the new leaders in women’s volleyball after splitting a pair of matches with then-ranked No.6 Alberta (14-6). The Dinos visit MacEwan this weekend.
In other U SPORTS rankings, Laval (women’s basketball), Brandon (men’s volleyball), UBC (men’s and women’s swimming), Guelph (men’s and women’s track and field) and Brock (men’s and women’s wrestling) remain at No.1 for another week.
