The Dalhousie Tigers entered the 1995-96 season with high hopes of winning their first conference championship in three years. The Tigers had several key returning players such as AUAA All-Star keeper Trevor Chisholm, defensive veterans Chris Devlin, and Matthew Serieys, as well as attacking standout Ante Jazic. The depth of the Tigers led them to an undefeated regular season with 8 wins and 3 ties in 11 games. They won the Atlantic University Athletic Association championship at Wickwire field as the host team and would advance to the national championships hosted by the University of Quebec, Trois Rivieres. They would eventually be crowned national champions after a 3-1 win over the University of Alberta Golden Bears.

Mark Ellis led the team with 10 goals, 5 of which came in the playoffs. Trevor Chisholm, Chris Devlin, Paul English, Ante Jazic and Marc Rainford were all named AUAA all-stars. Jazic was also the AUAA rookie of the year and a second team All-Canadian selection.
